Syd became the second member of The Internet to release solo material earlier this year - just one week after fellow member Matt Martian’s shared The Drum Chord Theory, the soulful chanteuse Syd also gave us Fin. That was in February, but she’s already back with another R&B coated treat, ‘Treading Water’. In a tweet, the artist explained that "This was my favorite song on #FIN before i had to cut it,” but we reckon this smooth and smoky sip is even better as an understated single. Produced by album collaborators Steve Lacy and Ronald “Flip” Colson, the more discerning listener might latch on to the very same instrumental heard in Big Sean and Jhené Aiko’s ‘Selfish’. The samba-esque rhythm and Syd’s sweet vocal is a delicious combination, very much fitting in with the vibe of Fin and possibly hinting at more material to come this year. We certainly hope so. - HT
